We chose to enjoy the superior facilities at Hawkshead Hall campsite one more time. And yes that's s plug for the site. It's great :-)
We packed up then had a large breakfast of porridge, scramble eggs and toast. Got to get the fuel in.
We set off with spirits high as we only had 28 miles to do so a short day, or so we thought.
The first highlight was the ferry crossing of lake Windermere. It was a beautiful sunny morning and the lake was calm ( bobby does not do traveling on water) so it was a smooth crossing.
We then had to do a wee bit of pushing up the steep hill out if Windermere, the hill just went on and on and on and on .... You get the picture :-(
This turned out to be the theme of the day, short down hill followed by long steep uphill (pushing sometimes), not what we had expected. All this in sun hot enough to melt the tarmac. The wheels were gathering stones that stuck to the melted tar.
We eventually made it to the bridge over the M6 just before it goes in to the valley before Tebay.
Just after that was the beautiful old railway viaduct that you can see from the M6.
We passed under the viaduct and then up yet another steep hill that just kept on going up. We were very tired of pushing the bikes. The effort of the previous day had really sapped out legs of staying power.
Eventually we made it to Sedbrgh which is a charming wee town with lots of local shops. We picked up supplies in the lovely cool Spar shop. We had decided that tonight was to be handmade pizza night.
We arrived at the campsite to discover the 5 star facilities of the previous site are 10 points higher than these :-( not a place for those afraid of spiders. I have never showered in a converted cow shed.
We had arrived at about 2:30 as we had not stopped for lunch. We put up the fly sheet of my tent and had lunch after which bobby had a wee snooze.
Now the pizza recipe we used for our evening meal was thanks to Sandy. It worked really well. We got two pizzas each all done on our wee spirit stoves.
We have drunk a lot of extra fluids this evening to try and replace all we lost through the day, in the baking sun, and now feel much better than when we arrived.
Today's stats
Miles: 29.62
Average speed: 8.4mph (darn pushng is so slow)
Max speed:39.1mph (but the down hills are good ;-) )
Peddle time: 3 hrs 30 mins
Trip time: 4 hrs 20 mins
That's all for today B road fans.
Less pictures tonight due to slow connection.
At least it should be more downhill than uphill once you get 1/2 way?!. Your Photos tell a good story.
